1990s to Today

In the 1990s, our founder Julia Sosa and medical providers whom she worked with noticed the growing the Latino population in the Tuscaloosa area and the great need to make resources accessible for all.

The Hispanic Provider Network was born and established a place for Spanish-speaking individuals to receive health services, interpretation/translation services, and community resources. This network grew over time to host large events like Brazos Abiertos, offering free health, vision, and hearing screenings; information on legal resources, nutrition, and education; and children’s activities, food, and cultural entertainment––all in one place.

Over time, this network slowed, but from it, the Tuscaloosa Latino Coalition (TLC) was born. In 2017, TLC reignited under the same leadership of Julia Sosa and has grown to become a recognized 501(c)(3) organization, hosting numerous events every year, offering cultural trainings, providing translation/interpretation services, conducting bilingual therapy sessions, and continuing to advocate for Latinos in Tuscaloosa and surrounding counties.
