Agency Feature – La Escuelita de Inglés
La Escuelita de Inglés (La EDI) offers free, nighttime English classes to Spanish-speaking adults in the Tuscaloosa community. La EDI fills a a few key gaps in the community-based ESL space by offering classes outside of regular work hours, providing childcare services, and teaching at a true beginner level utilizing Spanish to teach English in its Group 1 class.
La EDI’s teachers, volunteers, and administrators are all University of Alabama students who gain practical knowledge and experience of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and develop greater cultural understanding from interactions with students of all ages.
La EDI’s curriculum is based around survival English, teaching the English needed for every day life in Tuscaloosa with topics such as family, jobs, going to the doctor, going shopping, etc. La EDI students are empowered to pursue their career goals, assist their children with their homework, and share about their own cultures in English.
La Escuelita de Inglés hosts classes twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM with Tuesday classes focused on traditional class instruction and Thursday classes focused on conversation practice and guest speakers who offer students community resources.
TLC is very grateful for La EDI’s great volunteer base that supports TLC events in whatever way needed.
